Double Standard?

Riddle me this Batman- remember when we were little and we helped our moms make chocolate chip cookies? We would do minimal work but she would always make us feel as if she couldn't do it without us. And then we would wait.....wait until she was done mixing the dough. Because...we knew we were going to get one of the beaters full of dough to lick off. It was wonderful. Obviously so delicious that a Mr. Ben and a Mr. Jerry decided it should be made into an ice cream. Anyway, here is my question. Why is it that when we make cookies today with our children that we do not let them lick the beaters out of fear of salmonella when we still scoop spoonfuls into our mouths when they aren't looking? Are we immune to getting sick from raw eggs because we did it so often as kids? Do we not want to share with our little loved ones, or just not want them to get "the taste" of it OR is it that the risk is worth it? If you are like me, cookie dough is dangerous. It is kind of like a drug. You think you can just lick one beater or spoon and move on to finishing the cookies...but no. You need a little more until you probably have eaten at least the equivalent of six regular cookies and then you wait and pray to whomever that you don't get diarrhea from the eggs. What is wrong with this picture?

Dough or no dough? I have to say that eating the cookie dough has always been a favorite past time. Would I pass it on to my kids? Hard to say. Did anyone really pass the tradition on to us or was it just a given practice?
